MAGISTRATE RULES IN TEACHERS' FAVOR!

MAGISTRATE RULES IN TEACHERS' FAVOR!!

IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE BREVARD COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD AGREE TO THE FINAL BFT BARGAINING PROPOSALS AS FOLLOWS:

Issue #1 - Salary increases shall be awarded according to contract status and 2017-18 performance evaluation as follows:

Salary Schedule Highly Effective Effective

Performance Pay $2,300 $1,725

Grandfather $2,299 $1,724

Issue #2 – Bargaining unit members certified in Exceptional Student Education shall receive an $835 supplement in addition to the $165 supplement they currently receive for being certified in a critical shortage area, for a total supplement of $1,000.

Magistrate Young stated, “It is well within the School Board’s power to change priorities and fund this proposal without bringing it its fund balance to a fiscally irresponsible position.” Furthermore, he noted, “It seems axiomatic that Brevard County School District would seek to put itself in a more favorable competitive position to attract and retain quality teachers, and this would in the best interests of the children and the public it serves.”

This was a huge step towards righting an injustice! The district should do the right thing and accept the magistrate’s findings. However, Dr. Mullins (not the board) has 20 days to decide if he accepts or rejects it. If he rejects it, the next step is that we need the school board to agree to the magistrate’s recommendation at a legislative hearing.

A neutral party understood and agreed with us.

Will the school board have the sense to do the same?

We MUST ALL be at the hearing and demand that the school board does the right thing.

We will provide more info as we get it. Right now, spread the word that the magistrate sided with teachers and if you contact the board members or have the opportunity to speak to them, RESPECTFULLY urge them to accept the magistrate’s decision.
