Why Join BFT?

Unionism
BFT is our union.  As a union, we negotiate and protect our contract.  That might not sound important, but it is the basis for making our workplace better. It is the key to making this a better profession and, ultimately, better schools for our children.

Protection of Your Rights

Hiring an attorney for a job-related concern can easily cost thousands of dollars. Your BFT membership provides professional representation for all these issues and more:

  • Disciplinary matters, including investigations, administrator leave, letters of reprimand, and suspensions.

  • Student or parent complaints

  • DCF investigations

  • Law enforcement investigations

  • DOE investigations

  • Contract renewal

  • Evaluations

  • Contract violations by administration (grievances)

  • Insurance or Benefits issues

  • Transfers (both voluntary or involuntary)

  • Leaves of absences

  • Certification matters

  • Your membership comes with $1,000,000 Professional Liability Insurance covering civil claims arising out of professional activities.

Professional Development Opportunities

Through the American Federation of Teachers’ TEACH program, BFT offers best in class professional development for free to members. Among other offerings we have “Managing Anti-social Behavior” which counts towards the ESE recertification requirement that ALL teachers must complete.

American Teacher
American Federation of Teachers' award-winning monthly newspaper.

NEA Today
National Education Association's award-winning monthly Magazine.

American Educator
AFT's quarterly professional journal.

Be a part of lobbying for your profession!

BFT activists work year round to spread our message to members of the Brevard Delegation. Every year some of us travel to Tallahassee to meet with our elected officials. Several more meet in their local offices. We are also active in School Board campaigns. When we work together, we send a unified message that has benefited all of us through the years.
